The suite: This year's major Four Seasons Mauritius
refurbishment saw the unveiling of a new-look presidential suite. It
may not be the property's largest villa (that accolade goes to the two
Royal Residences, which have secluded locations, five bedrooms apiece
and sell at a similar price point), but the presidential suite tips the
scales with its peerless setting on the resort's private island. This
gives the three-bedroom suite panoramic views across a tranquil lagoon
and, despite the privileged, secluded setting, it remains within easy
reach of water sports, the spa and beachfront dining.

The details: There's a definite sense of arrival on
first entering the presidential suite. The standalone villa is accessed
via a private courtyard that connects, if desired, to two adjacent
one-bedroom villas to create a private complex that accommodates up to
14 guests. Inside the suite, a spacious entrance foyer gives onto a
light, bright living space whose dining area comfortably seats 10;
nearby a full kitchen with discrete entrance for staff means bespoke
menus can be prepared and served promptly. Glass doors open onto a
generous veranda that's perfect for outdoor lounging and dining. Beyond
lies a swimming pool and, beside it, a daybed shaded by a thatched
pavilion. It's the very best spot for contemplating the views out
across the lagoon.
The fresh new look throughout the suite is the work of local designer,
Virginie Dalais, who has given each of the en-suite bedrooms its own
particular style. The first features a four-poster bed in elegant, dark
kiaat wood, plus a show-stopping bathroom
with circular bath, hammam-style steam room and outdoor hot-tub. The
newly built master bedroom, meanwhile, is dressed in natural fabrics and
faces to the east - all the better for watching the sun rise without
having to actually get up. The bathroom also has a statement-piece tub
and, in common with the others, an outdoor shower for al-fresco
ablutions. Plainer than the others, the third bedroom is perhaps best
for children.

The hotel: Beyond the presidential suite, Four
Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita comprises 135 villas (each with
private pool) across 64 acres of tropical gardens. Standing on the
mainland or the resort's private island, accommodation invariably proves
so inviting that many guests opt to stay put, which means that the
resort rarely feels busy, even at full capacity. The bars and
restaurants are all open-fronted, allowing them to fully embrace their
waterfront settings and gentle sea breezes. The three on-site
restaurants offer international cuisine covering grills, Italian,
Mauritian and pan-Asian alongside Four Seasons service that, as you'd
expect from the brand, is genuine, slick and intuitive.
Who goes? Couples and honeymooners
select the resort for privacy and peace, while European, Middle Eastern
and Russian families are lured by the safe beaches and excellent
facilities. Flexibility and size make the presidential suite ideal for
extended family groups.
The area: The resort is
situated on the island's east coast, 45 minutes from the airport. With
its upmarket ambiance and exemplary service, it's ideal for a
fly-and-flop sunshine break, and excellent on-site facilities make it
very hard to leave. Leisure options include two sandy beaches, water
sports, golf and coral-reef snorkelling tours. There's also a spa tucked
into the mangroves with 12 over-water treatment rooms and signature
therapies such as the stress-relieving Mauritian Fusion massage and
Afrique Mystique age-defying facial.
For a change of scene, the
concierge can organise day trips to attractions such as Ile aux
Aigrettes, an offshore nature reserve inhabited by endemic wildlife.
Life-size bronzes of extinct Mauritian animals (including the dodo) lie
scattered through the woods: a poignant reminder of island ecosystems'
fragility.
